Premier League goals record broken – but Newcastle didn’t get the memo – Chronicle Live

This week’s Premier League fixtures have seen the most amount of goals recorded ever in the top-flight in the 20 team format.

No one told Newcastle though, as the Magpies were one of only two teams not to register a goal – Sheffield United being the other.

A total of 44 goals were scored, which is more than any other Premier League game week.

The action also saw eight penalties and four red cards – two of them at St James’ Park with Brighton taking the lead from the spot in their 3-0 win, and the visitors’ Yves Bissouma sent off for a late high foot on Jamal Lewis.

The previous record was set in the 2010-11 season – and Newcastle fans will remember this one.

Game week 24 that season saw United’s dramatic 4-4 draw with Arsenal, when the Magpies came back from 4-0 down to earn a memorable point.

Alan Pardew’s side were reeling from a 26-minute Gunners blitz, with Theo Walcott, Johan Djourou and a Robin van Persie brace putting the visitors in control.

However, things turned around in astonishing fashion following Abou Diaby’s red card on 50 minutes.
